Not too long ago, I was having one of those days. You know the type… when everything seems to go wrong and the world is out to get you. I woke up tired and grumpy. I forgot to put my coffee cup in its place before starting the coffee maker, only realizing my mistake when I turned around to get my morning jolt and finding coffee all over the counter.
All morning, as seemingly mishap after mishap occurred, I kept reminding myself of several concepts in my book – quit bleeping around, emotions are data, get over it, and so on. On this particular day though, my little tactics were NOT working. At one point, I decided that this was just going to be one of those days. Thankfully, they don’t come around often and I would just muster through it.
Being a superachiever, I decided I was going to own it… fully! Rather than fight against it, I went deeper into being tired, grumpy, and mistake-prone. I rescheduled the meetings I had in the afternoon so I wouldn’t subject anyone else to my misery and focused on all the tasks on my “to do” list that were mindless and wouldn’t be too risky if I messed them up.
Wouldn’t you know it? After giving myself permission to wallow in my tired grumpiness, and even clearing my schedule to do so, in less than two hours I was more relaxed and believing that the world really wasn’t out to get me. Sometimes we have to make room to fully go through something that is unpleasant (or even painful), rather than trying to get around it. By the next morning, I was teeming with my usual energy and ready to take on the world!
The next time you find yourself having one of those days… how can you fully own it?
